A 29-year-old Souris man charged with assault causing bodily harm and unlawful confinement appeared in Georgetown provincial court on Thursday.
Joe Roddie Clair had the matter adjourned until Aug. 9 in Georgetown to give him time to find a lawyer.
Crown prosecutor Nathan Beck told the court that the matters are being treated by way of indictment which carries more severe penalties compared to summary offences if the accused is convicted.
The offences allegedly occurred on July 31 against a Souris woman.
When asked if he understood the charges, Clair told Judge Nancy Orr he understood the assault causing bodily harm charge but not the unlawful confinement. Orr explained the charge to him and advised him that the matters are serious.
Clair is scheduled to be in Charlottetown provincial court today on other matters.
