TORONTO — Canada's main stock index was up moderately in morning trading as most market sectors advanced.
The Toronto Stock Exchange's S&P/TSX composite index was up 89.82 points at 16,404.90 after 90 minutes of trading. Among the advances were information technology and the materials sector, including silver and gold producers.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 9.28 points at 25,574.47. The S&P 500 index was up 2.05 points at 2,859.75 and the Nasdaq composite index was up 21.14 points at 7,909.47.
The Canadian dollar was at 76.71 cents, up from Wednesday's average of 76.62 cents US..
The September crude contract was up four cents at US$66.98 per barrel and the September natural gas contract was up less than a cent at US$2.96 per mmBTU.
The December gold contract was up 40 cents at US$1,221.40 an ounce and the September copper contract was up less than three cents at $2.78 a pound.
